The 2013 legislative session may be in its second week, but it’s campaign season once again in two Minnesota House districts after recently re-elected lawmakers opted to take national lobbying jobs instead of returning to St. Paul.
The House seat that includes North Mankato and St. Peter has given every appearance of being a DFL stronghold in recent election cycles. Rep. Terry Morrow weathered the 2010 GOP wave by 10 points. In 2012, after the new district maps were unveiled, the GOP did not field a candidate to challenge him in the general election. Now that Morrow is resigning, the GOP and the Independence Party are feeling suddenly bullish on their chances to claim victory from the DFL.

In Senate District 24, which includes the southern Minnesota regional centers of Owatonna and Faribault, one candidate is warning about the harmful effects of state spending cuts while the other is throwing cold water on Gov. Mark Dayton’s desired income tax increase on the wealthiest earners.

Republican 1st Congressional District candidates Mike Parry and Allen Quist may have spent the last few weeks trading barbs in press releases and news accounts, but many of those who actually live in the state’s southernmost district haven’t seemed to notice.

Michele Bachmann, running for her fourth term representing Minnesota’s Sixth Congressional district, pulled in just more than $1 million in the month of July, easily surpassing her fellow Minnesota Congressmen and women in total fundraising hauls, as well as her Democratic opponent Jim Graves, who raised $64,000 in that period.

Minnesota House and Senate candidates took in more than $6 million during the second quarter of 2012, according to reports filed with the Federal Elections Commission. U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann raked in the biggest haul at $1.9 million. That's more than six times the amount raised by DFL challenger Jim Graves in the Sixth Congressional District.
Allen Quist plans to run in the GOP primary in the 1st Congressional District. Quist and state Sen. Mike Parry fought to a draw in an epic battle for the GOP endorsement earlier this month.
After more than 12 hours and 23 rounds of balloting, Republican activists in the 1st Congressional District adjourned their endorsing convention in stalemate, with GOPers deeply divided over whether state Sen. Mike Parry or former Rep. Allen Quist should carry the party's banner in the fall election.
Having the support of Bachmann in his battle with state Sen. Mike Parry for the GOP nomination could prove a boon for Quist.
