Bully for Pat Flahaven!

With deep regret for the loss at the Minnesota Legislature and great joy for Secretary of the Senate Pat Flahaven and his wife, Maureen Flahaven, everyone at PIM and the Capitol Report wish Pat all the best as he retires and begins the next chapter of his life.

Not unexpectedly, Bill Salisbury of the St. Paul Pioneer Press and one of the few great institutional political reporters remaining at the Capitol, nails Flahaven:

"Revered for his fairness, calm style and institutional knowledge, Flahaven has been an impartial voice in a sometimes tense and fiercely partisan chamber."

Be sure to read the whole Salisbury piece, which details Flahaven's career. Salisbury also quotes Sen. Maj. Leader Larry Pogemiller (DFL-Minneapolis), who speaks for many in saying, "Pat has personified the Senate. For some, he is the Senate."

Congratulations to Flahaven on his stellar career and the remission of his cancer.

Because we're at a loss for more words, we'll ratify what Pogemiller also said, "It will be hard to imagine the Senate without him."

What Does The Al Franken Campaign Have Against KSTP's Tom Hauser? / Is The Franken Campaign Unduly Influencing Debate Minnesota?

Last Friday at precisely 3:06 p.m., we published our PIM Weekly Report. In our lead story about the Minnesota U.S. Senate debates I wrote, "The first of three debates sponsored by Debate Minnesota, the Rochester debate will be moderated by KSTP TV's Tom Hauser and WCCO AM's Jack Rice.  The 90-minute format will include time for two-minute answers, and about half an hour of questions from the audience."

St. Paul Pioneer Press Reporters Morph into Animals -- Political Animals

The St. Paul Pioneer Press Capitol press corps team has launched a new blog, "The Political Animal." Veteran political reporters Bill Salisbury, Rachel Stassen-Berger and Dennis Lien "will cover the ins and outs of Minnesota politics from the legislative session to the political races to Republican National Convention." So far, so good. A post about which legislators accept the lowest per diems of the bunch. Answers: Sen. Tony Lourey (DFL-Kerrick) in the Senate and Rep. Steve Simon (DFL-St. Louis Park) in the House. Another about Republican legislators sporting new "I Support Molnau" buttons. And, a post about Rep. Dennis Ozment (R-Rosemount) arriving at the Capitol direct from Ecuador a mere 20 minutes before yesterday's opening gavel. All posts telling us something we didn't know. Good on Salisbury, Stassen-Berger and Lien.
