Note: This story first appeared in the December 11, 2009 issue of the Weekly Report. This week's biggest political surprise was Sen. Dick Day's (R-Owatonna) announcement that he will leave the Senate as of January 8 to head up Racino Now, the newly formed group that will lobby to create full-blown casinos at Minnesota's two horse tracks, Canterbury Downs and Running Aces. Racino Now claims the two racinos could generate $125 million a year in state tax revenues--or, as Day puts it, "money for education, roads, health care, stadiums - you name it!"

The Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission (MSFC) has hired Tunheim Partners to work for a new Vikings stadium, or a remodel of the HHH Metrodome - an effort that will likely ramp up during the 2010 legislative session and try to achieve critical mass during the 2011 budgeting session.

With state media in "all Brett, all the time" mode, I couldn't help but start thinking about what Favre means for a new Vikings stadium. Certainly his political capital will hugely depend on how the season goes, both for him and the team.
