A bill that would prohibit state employees and elected officials from spending public dollars at hotels that offer customers access to violent pornographic movies passed unanimously out of a Senate committee this afternoon. The measure, introduced by Sen. Tarryl Clark, DFL-St. Cloud, cleared the Senate's State and Local Government Operation and Oversight Committee and will proceed directly to the floor.

Tarryl Clark was initially elected to the state Senate five years ago in a special election. She then easily won re-election in 2006 and emerged as a key DFL leader in the ensuing years. Now Clark is looking to unseat U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann in the 6th Congressional District.

An anti-pornography bill authored by state Sen. Tarryl Clark, DFL-St. Cloud, and scheduled to be heard this week by a Senate committee earned a lot of attention today -- both locally and nationally.

Maureen Reed and Tarryl Clark both unveiled maps in the last 24 hours of U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann's travels across the country. The gist of the message from the DFL congressional challengers: Bachmann is more interested in raising her national profile than working on behalf of constituents in the 6th Congressional District.

More than $2 million was raised by candidates in the 6th Congressional District in 2009. That makes it easily the most expensive U.S. House contest in Minnesota so far this election cycle.

As the 2010 Minnesota Legislature kicks off this week, a half-dozen legislators, most of them DFLers, have announced that they don't plan to be back when the gavel comes down on the 2011 session.

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., who is seeking a a third term this fall, ended the 2009 Federal Election Commission reporting cycle with more than $1 million in cash on hand, her campaign reported today.
