As Minnesota attempts to dig itself out of a $1.2 billion deficit, the 15-term DFL representative from Minneapolis came up with a plan that some say would save the state an estimated $500,000 each biennium. The idea: Abolish the position of lieutenant governor.
Steve Sviggum, former Republican Speaker of the House and current commissioner of the MN Department of Labor and Industry, will not be running for governor. Mary Lahammer reported this morning that Sviggum received a letter from the Solicitor General stating that Sviggum’s position as commissioner prohibits him from running. Steve Perry reported for PIM a [...]

This morning Department of Labor and Industry Commissioner Steve Sviggum phoned PIM to confirm that he’s still awaiting an advisory opinion from the US Department of Justice that will seal the fate–for now, at least–of his on-hold run for governor. (More details here.)
Sviggum is not optimistic. He says federal officials "said verbally I was [...]
That’s the word this morning from Steve Sviggum’s office at the Department of Labor and Industry. As we noted a few weeks back, the DLI commissioner and former GOP House speaker put his run for governor on hold after learning that his role in administering federal Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) funds might disqualify [...]
Mike Longaecker of the Forum newspaper group reports (reg. req.) that Steve Sviggum, the commissioner of the Pawlenty administration’s Department of Labor and Industry (DLI), has been forced to put his pending campaign for the governor’s office on hold owing to some fairly obscure provisions of the federal Hatch Act, which prohibits federal employees from [...]
Saturday’s
GOP state central committee meeting flushed out new candidates running
for governor. Notably, former House Speaker and current Department of
Labor & Industry Commissioner Steve Sviggum is joining the
fray. Given his track record of taking the Republicans from the
minority to the majority in the House — and raising millions to do so
– puts him in the top [...]

[This story first appeared in the 7 November 2008 issue of the PIM Weekly Report.]
I’ve speculated in the past
about Democrats looking to run for Governor in 2010. Now it’s time to
turn to the gubernatorial speculation among Republicans, who, by the
way, are incredibly eager to move on to the next election, given what
happenedin 2008.
First things first. [...]
The former GOP speaker of the House, now Commissioner of the Department Labor & Industry, Steve Sviggum
received the nation’s top legislative honor: The 2008 Excellence in
State Legislative Leadership Award. Sviggum accepted the award from the
National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) last week in New
Orleans. The award honors two legislators each year "whose careers
embody the highest [...]
Last night in Zumbrota the Republican delegates in District 28A unanimously endorsed Steve Drazkowski of Wabasha to be their candidate to run for the seat being vacated by Rep. Steve Sviggum (R-Kenyon) who is now Commissioner of Labor & Industry. Should other GOP candidates file (the filings close today), there will be a [...]
