
On September 1, Minnesota officially missed the deadline to seek $1 million in federal dollars to help plan for the creation of a "health insurance exchange." Gov. Tim Pawlenty's decision to forego the federal dollars seemed curious for several reasons.

Predictably, the downturn has been hard on contract lobbyists who represent clients on real estate and construction matters. Tom Lehman, a health care lobbyist who has his own firm, said the lobbying business these days is depressed in most sectors.

Emmer, now the GOP nominee for governor of Minnesota, has earned a reputation over his three terms at the Legislature as an abrasive lawmaker, even with members of his own caucus.

A Gallup Poll this week announced the results of a survey of registered voters using a generic ballot and found that Republicans had a 10-percent lead over Democrats, which was the GOP's largest margin in the history of the poll's mid-term survey, which was first conducted in 1942.

The fall campaign season is in full swing in Minnesota. The primary dust has all but settled, and Minnesota lawmakers are politicking and munching on pronto pups at the State Fair. Candidates and special interest groups are also rapid-firing campaign ads across the airwaves.

For months now the air waves have been filled with hype and hyperbole from Minnesota's gubernatorial candidates explaining how they're going to come up with billions in revenue the state badly needs.
