The gang at PIM and Capitol Report fanned out last night across the metro to cover the caucuses.
I missed my caucus in 2008 because Fox 9 News ran four hours of live caucus coverage that night in which I participated. (In 2008, you’ll recall, we had the excitement of Barack Obama on the left and Ron Paul on the right.)
So I decided to check in on my home turf, where three precincts gathered in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church off the north finger of Lake of the Isles.
One of the bigger stories from the 2010 caucuses appears to be that GOP attendance came close to matching the DFL’s. As I’m writing this, the GOP had tallied 19,357 attendees (with 98.9% of precincts reporting), and the DFL, 22,136 people (with 80.2% of precincts reporting).
But the GOP had no such luck in Minneapolis, at least in the heart of District 60A, which is represented by House Speaker and gubernatorial candidate Margaret Anderson Kelliher (DFL)… and where Obama bested John McCain, 80.2%, to 17.6%.
Ward 7, Precinct 2 had seven people; Ward 7, Precinct 3 had four people (if you include me); and Ward 7, Precinct 4 had three people. A grand total of 14 GOP souls. True to form in our neighborhood, heaven help the GOP friends and neighbors you know who don’t show up. Veteran contract lobbyist and GOPer Jennifer Breitinger was a no-show last night and thus unanimously elected to be Ward 7, Precinct 3 chair.
Here’s betting Breitinger shows up at the 2012 caucus to make sure her chairmanship is terminated.
