Rep. Tom Rukavina (DFL-Virginia) has continued a truly excellent series of videos with “Cereal,” his new spot that’ll air for a time on local cable. It’s the first television ad from any gubernatorial candidate, and it really sets a high bar. We’re assuming that the spot was produced by Tommy’s son, Victor Rukavina, along with St. Paul multimedia/ad/PR shop Mojo Solo—they collaborated on his other videos. Far more than other candidates to date, Rukavina has made unified, attractive messaging a priority for his campaign. From the stylized logo to the original slogan ( “Refreshingly Honest”) to the healthy dose of Rukavina-style humor, no one has really come close.

With the overachieving “Cereal,” the candidate takes aim at the Pawlenty administration’s legacy in a form everyone can relate to: mushy breakfast. Eyes light up when Refreshingly Honest Cereal hits the table ( “packed with the progressive ingredients…part of a complete and balanced Minnesota”). The sparkly motion graphics poke fun at the cereal commercials we all know.

Most polls don’t show Rukavina as a front-runner, but other candidates would do well to adopt a bit of his humor, or at least his appealing sense of graphic identity. See the video here.

Indeed, it IS an original slogan and campaign theme… from 2002:

Hey 2002, you must need some new reading glasses. The 2002 slogan reads “Refreshingly Clean Politics”. Rukavina’s slogan is “Refreshingly Honest”. Not the same slogan… unless you can’t read.
