Seifert stepping down

House Minority Leader Marty Seifert (R-Marshall) is stepping down
from his leadership post, effective today. Reason? He is "considering
a run for governor." Seifert has always maintained that House
leadership — on both sides of the aisle — does a disservice to his or
her caucus and to the Legislature, if there are higher-office
motivations in play.

This certainly puts his DFL House counterpart, House Speaker Margaret Kelliher (DFL-Minneapolis), in an awkward spot, should she also decide to run for governor. Rep. Tom Emmer
(R-Delano), too, who came close to beating Seifert last fall for
minority leader and is considering running for governor as well.

The House GOP Caucus will meet in late June to elect a new leader.

While I respect Rep. Seifert’s decision to do what he thinks is best for the GOP and the state, I disagree that the Speaker should be compelled to step down or that it puts her in awkwad spot. By the same logic, shouldn’t Governor Pawlenty have stepped down last year as he is very obviously considering a run for president?
