Report: Norm Coleman will concede Senate race if Minnesota Supreme Court finds against him

This afternoon Roll Call is reporting–and hey, guys, way to bury a lede–that former Sen. Norm Coleman will drop his re-election court fight if the Minnesota Supreme Court doesn’t rule in his side’s favor. Here’s the nut graf, my emphasis added:
Sources close to Coleman say the former Senator would likely give up his legal battle and accept defeat if the Minnesota Supreme Court decides in Franken’s favor. That’s because Coleman anticipates that Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) would ultimately sign Franken’s certification
papers….[S]ources say Coleman, who is vying for a second term, does not have the same appetite to pursue his case in federal court as he did for his state court battle.

Seems to me that the question will come down to whether Coleman can afford to stay in office. He has debts, he isn’t a young man. Over the next several years the Israel Lobby is going to need help, and they need help now. They can afford the kind of pay that will sooth Norm’s bruised ego, but he’s losing value as a lobbyist. If he acts like a total jerk in the Senate election contest, playing puppet for the Republican National Committee, it will make if difficult to get Democrats to return his phone calls.
And for the next four years, the Democrats run things in Washington,with Al Franken or without him.

“Why exactly would Pawlenty sign an election certificate for Democrat Al Franken before all legal appeals were exhausted?”
Because that’s what state law requires after all state-level appeals have been exhausted.

The Dems run Washington with or without Franken, but until he is actually seated, they are one person short of the magical 60. Without Franken to cast the 60th vote the GOP still have a voice and the White House still has to listen to their concerns. Obama is not going to use reconciliation to pass anything.
