Almost 7,500 people have signed on online petition encouraging
Republican Norm Coleman to give up his fight to regain his U.S. Senate
seat, and thousands more have joined a "Give It Up, Norm" group on
Facebook and viewed a video posted by the Minnesota DFL Party.

DFL Chair Brian Melendez says the party has posted a new video, which includes footage of Coleman immediately after the November election, saying that if he were DFL challenger Al Franken, he would "step back" and concede.

Franken was declared the winner earlier this month after a three-judge panel determined that he had received 312 more votes than Coleman. However, Coleman immediately appealed that ruling and has vowed to continue appealing the election until the case reaches the U.S. Supreme Court.

"(Coleman) and his legal team are going to rehash arguments that they were unsuccessful in making before the three-judge panel after seven weeks of trial," Melendez said. "The overwhelming majority of legal scholars rate his chances as slim to none.

" … Former Senator Coleman is legally entitled to appeal the election contest court’s ruling. But just because you are legally entitled to do something doesn’t mean that it’s the smart thing or the right thing to do. The right thing to do here would be to accept gracefully the results of the seven-week trial, and let Minnesota get its full representation in the Senate. The right thing to do would be to stop the obstruction that is being dictated and funded by national Republicans and special-interest groups."

As of noon Tuesday, 7,479 people had signed the petition on the GiveItUpNorm.com website. Another 5,644 people had joined the Facebook group, and 4,881 people had viewed the first video on YouTube.
