Firestorm continues to swirl around Jeff Larson

Republican heavy hitter Jeff Larson and his political pals found themselves assailed on all sides Thursday, as various media around the country reported that Larson not only ran the firm making robo-calls on behalf of John McCain’s presidential campaign, but that he also served as Sarah Palin’s wardrobe consultant, spending tens of thousands in Republican National Committee funds to make sure she campaigns in high fashion.

Last week, Larson’s St. Paul-based political telecommunications company, FLS Connect, was identified as being responsible for a series of Republican-themed, anti-Barack Obama phone calls targeting voters in various parts of the country, including Minnesota.

There were also reports that FLS Connect was making "robocalls," automated, pre-recorded phone calls, within Minnesota, where such calls are illegal.

Dan Ronayne, a Larson spokesman, says FLS Connect has not done that.

"I’ve been assured 1,000 percent that they aren’t doing robocalls" in Minnesota, said Ronayne, managing director of communications for the Howard Consulting Group in Washington, D.C., a public affairs company.

Some media organizations also hinted that FLS Connect had been responsible for a series of phone calls during the 2000 South Carolina primary in which listeners were told
