Mostly urban. Moorhead prides itself on being a cosmopolitan city with a small-town feel. The area has been a regional center on the Red River since the 1860's when it was a transfer point for Hudson Bay Company goods bound for Winnipeg and other points north. There is a significant student population and increasing minority population, primarily due to the colleges, newly established immigrants, and seasonal migrant work in the sugar beet industry. The largest employers in the district include the college and university, senior living provider Eventide and American Crystal Sugar. These industries mean one out of every five workers is a union member. The majority of residents are church-affiliated. Politically, the district is mixed and not dominated by either party. The population is conservative compared to other urban centers.
