Small cities and remote areas. The district is home to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA), Voyageurs National Park (VNP) and Superior National Forest; there are more state parks here than any other district and there are also two Indian reservations. The mining industry has been reinvesting in new technology, rebuilding capacity lost in the 1980s. Wealthier people are moving in along the North Shore. As property values in the lakes areas continue to climb, the locals are being displaced. There are growing arts communities around the North Shore and Ely. A high percentage of senior citizens live in the district. Since the BWCA blowdown in the summer of 1999 that flattened thousands of acres of trees in the area, there has been increasing concern about serious wildfires, like the one in the summer of 2007. Politically this is a traditionally DFL district, but there is a growing number of independent-minded, centrist voters, suspicious of big government controlling so much of their land.
