100% rural. Geographically, Hibbing is the largest city in the state and has the distinction (not unheard of elsewhere on the Range) of having been picked up and moved to get at the ore underneath. Hibbing High School is designated a national historic site. Mining companies built many of the area schools. Chisholm is home to IronWorld, built to preserve the history of the Iron Range people and their role in moving the United States into the industrial age. The Iron Range supplied steel for two world wars. The 2005 film North Country was filmed here. The movie is loosely based on the story of 15 Minnesota women who filed a controversial sexual harassment lawsuit against Eveleth Mines. With the help of the Iron Range Resources, this district has been working hard to diversify its job base. Politically, the district is strong DFL with a heavy labor influence and high voter turnout.
