House District 19A

Suburban/exurban/rural mix. Wright County's population grew 31 percent over the last decade. The Dakota tribe camped, hunted and fished this area for more than 300 years. Maple Lake, like much of this part of the state, was first settled by immigrants (many of whom were of Irish descent) who carved out their existence on homestead properties. Then came "the lumber people," who harvested the mature hardwoods that made up the Big Woods. This once rural area struggles to retain some of that identity, although it is now dominated by commuters working in the Twin Cities or St. Cloud. Politically, this is GOP territory.
