House District 16A
Candidates:
Formerly rural, increasingly suburban. Although all four counties still have several farms, the region is quickly growing into a more suburban area, sending many people on commutes to the Twin Cities and St. Cloud. The district is home to about the southern half of Lake Mille Lacs, and residents are still focused on the continuing debate surrounding Native American gaming casinos. Major employers include Grand Casino Mille Lacs, Crystal Cabinets, Fairview Northland Hospital and Engineered Polymer Plastics. Politically, the once DFL leaning district has become more Republican friendly because of recent population growth.
