Mostly rural. This district is proud that its population no longer declining. Many people are semi-retired or telecommute from the new homes around the lakes. Lakefront properties have increased, putting pressure on the smaller resorts because of high taxes. There are also many dairy and crop (primarily soybeans, potatoes and corn) farms. New York Mills was named one of the top five "culturally cool towns" by USA Today Weekend Magazine. The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center offers art galleries, music and literary performance spaces and also hosts the national annual philosophy competition, The Great American Think-Off. In Waden County farming is the main industry, but there are also small-town retailers and Homecrest Industries, a major manufacturer of patio and outdoor furniture. Politically, the district is Republican.
