The verdant Red River Valley experienced tough times in the 1990's. The north flowing Red River and its many tributaries usually flood every spring. The residents are always prepared and damage is usually minimal, but in recent years state and federal assistance was needed during the recovery stage. The district has some of the richest farm land in the world. Crops grown include sugar beets, potatoes, beans and corn. Thief River Falls and Roseau are the largest cities in the district. While the population of Roseau continues to grow, other parts of the district are shrinking. The western part of the district is Red River Valley farm country while the eastern portion is made up of farm land, state forests and resorts on and around Lake of the Woods. The District is home to many members of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa. Because there are so many wetlands in the Valley, goose hunting is very popular in the fall. Major employers in the district include; Marvin Windows, Polaris Industries and Arctic Cat. Politically the district is DFL.
